My Home, My Choice Project: Seeking conversations with family/whānau
We have concluded our engagements for October - November 2023
The My Home My Choice programme focuses on the work needed to transform the way people in residential services are assisted so they have more choice and control in their lives.
This includes developing options and alternatives for people who are considering entry into or exit out of residential care.
The programme is still in its very early stages.

My Home My Choice Engagement opportunities for family and whānau
We know that family/whānau Māori provide assistance to disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori.
We are setting up online conversations where we will engage directly with family and whānau who have a loved one in in residential care or who is considering entering or leaving residential care.
Our learnings from these engagements will be used to inform the My Home My Choice Programme.
Topics we will discuss include:
- Possible alternative options for people considering entering residential services
- Increasing people’s choice and control within residential services
- Possible alternative options for people who want to leave residential services
- Building the capability of Whaikaha and government partners to embed the Enabling Good Lives principles, equity and citizenship through policy, contracts and commissioning within the context of My Home My Choice
Other opportunities
We are also holding separate engagements with disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori, Pacific people and service providers. For more information on these please email my_home_my_choice@whaikaha.govt.nz
